Hero of HackSaw Ridge

The hero behind the true story of Hacksaw Ridge was Desmond T. Doss born on February 7th 1919 in Lynchburg, Virginia by his parents William Thomas Doss (carpenter) and Bertha E. (Oliver) Doss who worked as a homemaker.

Desmond had two siblings his sister Audrey L. Millner and brother Harold Edward Doss.

During the Great Depression Desmond after the 9th grade dropped out of school to help support his parents where he worked at a shipyard in Newport News, Virginia doing defense work at the beginning of world war 2 later Doss enlisted in the military service at Camp Lee, Virginia on April 1 1942.

Later on he was sent to South Carolina's Fort Jackson to begin training with the 77th Infantry Division all while his brother Harold Doss performed aboard the USS Lindsey.

Desmond Doss being a Seventh-Day Adventist had very strong beliefs and blatantly turned down any weapons during combat or kill an enemy soldier.

Desmond became a medic where he was then assigned to the 2nd Platoon, B Company, 1st Battalion, 307th infantry, and the 77th Infantry Division.

While Desmond served with his platoon whereas each platoon of B Company had only one medic.

While in Guam on combat and the Philippines in 1944 Desmond was awarded with a Bronze Stat Medal for helping wounded soldiers while under attack.

For the Battle of Okinawa he helped save the lives of 75 wounded infantrymen from his very own battalion on the Maeda Escarpment.

Desmond Doss was wounded a total of four times in Okinawa and discharged on May 21, 1945 aboard the USS Mercy.

It wasn't until the year of 1946 where Desmond was diagnosed with Tuberculosis
where he contracted in Leyte.

Doss then began treatment which lasted for five and a half years which cost him five ribs and a lung but before being discharged in August of 1951 with 90% disability he still received help from the military until after an over dose of antibiotics where resulted in being deaf completely in the year 1976 where he then was awarded 100% disability and was given his hearing back after having a cochlear implant in 1988.

Undeterred by his injuries Desmond was able to raise a family.

At the age of 87 on March 23, 2006 in his Piedmont, Alabama home Desmond Doss died due to breathing complications.
